Sad Farewell

Sad Farewell

You may have noticed that the client has not been updated in some time. Sadly Real Life events have taken an unfortunate turn which basically puts an end to any more development.
The Plans for S22 have been shelved and the project has been marked as discontinued.

Installers have been removed as they are now very outdated, the sourcecode will of course remain. The website and forums will stay up for as long is required. Also inworld groups will stay active. It is of course entirely your choice as to how long you continue to use the client, however I do stress that it will fall behind with features and it may be wise to seek alternatives in the near future.

Dawny has been very Ill, and had to stop working. As you can imagine my priority is to support her in any way possible and that means I have to become the main bread winner, as much as I enjoy working on the client it's obviously the first thing to go.

Not much more to say...

BUT finally I would like to wish everyone who has supported the project over the years, a huge hug and many thanks, Jabba, Altair and all the people who have put up with my ranting and raving and unusual colour choices in UI. :)

Who knows what the future holds! But for now Kirstens Viewer goes into a deep sleep.

Presses the Shut Down button, Drives spin down, silence..........

Love to you all, KL

Unfortunate news indeed, it is however quite understandable.

Thank you KirstenLee for all that you did to give us a viewer that improved our Second life experience. While this is goodbye take pride in that you helped us for some time by providing an improved V2 biased viewer at a time when most other development groups seemed only focused on making improvements to the outdated V1 Client.

And while I am saddened to have to face moving on from your viewer, at least now at this time, I have options to chose from.
I wish you well, wherever your life's journey my take you.

I'm so sorry that Kirstens has to go, but totally understand that the needs of RL must come first. You really helped a great deal and this viewer was so stable for me. Thank you for everything you have done to help us all. Farewell! sob sob

I am sad to hear the news and offer my well wishes. While I have never fully used the viewer, it was always a goal to get a graphics card that can bring out the best that Kirstens Viewer offers. I just got the card the beginning of this week, and was looking forward to finally using your viewer after being in SL for almost 4 years now.

I will now look forward to the day it will return and can be used again by all.

This is very sad indeed, although RL always always has to come first.

I hope that Dawny gets well soon, and that both of you have a happy RL.

Thank you and all those who developed this wonderful viewer which I will miss an awful lot. I have loved it and it's been the best for the entire time I have used it.

It makes me wish I had the skills you do to be able to continue the project. This now leaves me with the horrible choice of what viewer to use because none of those I have seen come close to KV.

Farewell Lee, and but I won't say goodbye since hopefully you will return one day.

I know building a viewer requires a great deal of effort, time and perseverence. Kirsten's Viewer offered all of that and more. I for one can only state I wish Dusty the very - very best. I hope her health issues improve, and that life and SL continue to offer her things she can celebrate and appreciate to enhance her life. The two of you have given so much to make the SL experience better and you both deserve a huge round of applause and appreciate for your efforts. BRAVO !!!!!!!!! KL, I thank you for bringing us a really great viewer and for all the time you dedicated to keeping it going. I see others in group chat looking to keep the viewer updated, so if you can offer them advice like "What ever you do, don't take out this one line of code or things break big time" I'm sure they would appreciated it. But if you can't, I understand that RL takes priority over SL.

I hope you get to spend as much time with Dawny as you two can tolerate and that her health returns to her soon. Once again, thanks for your hard work on the viewer and best wishes always for the two of you.

  1. Torley - September 08, 2011 at 16:05 Reply

Kirsten and Dawny, first and foremost: all the best in health and happiness together, both in First and Second Life. There's no substitute for this, and as someone who's wrestled through relatable life conditions, it's really reassuring to know someone is there for you.

I have many fond memories of using KirstensViewer, and altho I intend to keep using it until the proverbial "wheels fall off", it's a testament to how filling a special niche — for us visualists — can matter so much and make such a massive difference. Many of my work and play projects were done in Kirstens', and whenever looking at the results, I'll always be thankful and reflect fondly on how you made it possible.

P.S. Re: the color choices, one of my mottos in life is to have a distinctive color scheme. It will carry you through times thick and thin. A really notable thing was you later DID offer a skin that matched the official LL Viewer very closely. So uncanny, it resulted in colleagues asking me about subtle-but-important differences like, "How did you get the Film menu to appear? I thought there was only Advanced/Develop/Admin". Ah, the Film menu, a masterstroke of convenience.

    Kirsten and Dawny:

I wish you the best, and may Dawny's health grow better and your lives be long and fruitful together. And to KL and all those who developed this viewer, you truly put out an amazing piece of technology.

It was amazing to see someone kick Linden Labs' ass at its own game, taking a viewer nearly everyone hated when it appeared (of course I speak of good ol' viewer 2.0) and turning it into a viewer that won over thousands of users with it's features and speed no one else had.

It is a sad day for viewer development that we lose your input into the creation of these systems, and a sad day for the community that we lose KirstenLee Cinquetti to the understandable needs of the real world.

*raising a glass of champagne* A toast, to KL and Dawny, may life in the real world treat you well, and to Jabba, Altair and others who assisted, may you find your way into the development of the remaining viewers or continue this one, bringing your experience and foresight and what you've learned working with KL to the other viewers out there, and thus to the rest of us! Long live Kirsten's Viewer!

Only sad to hear of the health issues. Health and First Life relationships are paramount; virtual world viewers are less than trivial in comparison.

I hope the health issues are resolved to best result and least expense, and that you and Dawny have much quality time together in your futures.

The KL viewer showed many of us the potential of the new 3D space we were just becoming acquainted with, and who can forget the OMG! Shadows! release? :-) I'm sure LL has you to thank for a large number of accounts retained.

    Cheers, and good fortune.

Really very sad news. the first and the most important, the cure and return to the good health of Dawny and also for you Kisrten, these things ever is the first. more words aren't needed what is a honestyl feeling (as this) About the viewer, really bad thing, one of the best (if not the best viewer of the history of Secondlife, Opensim and anothers) stopped they walk, and we feel now a hole very big in all the viortual words, but the life continue and maybe one day the thing change to better and reborn or appears another, only the time have the last word. In my part , i go to try conserved this viewer for my own way here in this virtual worlds. My sincerelly best Wishes for you and Dawny, Kirstens. Hugs.

This is sad news BUT why not let's all put together a Crowdfunding project to provide KL with a full time job CONTINUING development on the KL Viewer ? Or alternatively, If you use KLV for pro work surely it's worth a small monthly subscription to elevate the KLV to a real world product and full time job for Kirsten ? Just $10 a month from 1,000 people (or $19,95 from 500, say) would raise KL $10,000 a month and larger subs could give feature input, etc. Come on people, this is DOABLE !!! KL, please contact me if you want help with this - all the best !

  1. 2Degree Cryotank - September 09, 2011 at 1:33 Reply

As an example of Crowdfunding success, developer Nikodemus Siivola just raised $16,507 over a few weeks via the IndieGoGo CrowdFunding site , see :

This funding was towards coding improvements to the best free open source Lisp implementations, SBCL - a pretty niche topic. (BTW, I contributed at the $150 level, which will get me a 'perk' of a 15min Skype Call with the developer).

Kirsten's the best SL Viewer, with '000s of users, so how about a similar project for Kirsten ? Let's give Kirsten a full time development job ! All the best to Dawny too....

Than you KL, for this amazing viewer. It was amazing wile it lasted, it has shaped my view of SL itself in several cases. Its sad to see it go, but RL must take priority, I wish you and Dawny the best of luck.

Thank you for the wonderful viewer and user experience you have created for us over many years. Always a person to be on the bleeding edges of reality myself, it was only fitting to have a viewer that allowed me to do the same in my second life as well. Speaking from the heart and experience with sudden, chronic illness, I hope that you and Dawny soon find health and happiness again. In my case it took nearly 2 years to recover and I still suffer odd and occasional consequences, but overall I am better - I pray that Dawny comes back even faster. To you both, good luck, take care - but like you neglected to do - I refrain from a goodbye. ;)

Hope to see you hard at work and pushing the envelope with the rest of us in the near future!

Kirsten and Dawny, best wishes to both of you in RL. I have really appreciated all the work you have done on this viewer, which was the first to overcome many of the objections people had to V2. I particularly enjoyed discovering that I can smooth shadows with the latest Kirstens, which I can't seem to do with the LL V3. Special hugs to Dawny.

I want to say how much I admire your commitment. Its hard to give up something you care about. And with the wonderful viewer you have created here, it shows that you do care. I truly hate to see it go away. I have been using it for some time, and while other viewers do have some of the features that help make good photos in SL, none of them come close in comparison to the quality this one delivers. I plan to keep my older installation (updated just before mesh was released) and keep using it regardless; I was a shutterbug before your viewer, and it's only increased since i discovered it. ^_^ Take care, and I hope RL is good to you in all aspects of your life. I'd absolutely be willing to send $ to something like Kickstart if it would allow KL to both support Dawny and keep developing the viewer.

  1. steelsnake - September 14, 2011 at 5:04 Reply

In the past I've always tried to donate L$1000 per month to whichever TPV I was/am using, that includes Kirstens. I'd be absolutely willing to donate a measly US$6, or even US$10 each month to allow KL to work on the viewer. In fact, to lead by example I just gave KL L$2500 in-world.

I'd doubt even one quarter of all viewer users would donate, but to be honest, I firmly believe that it should be possible to find 250 people who pledge to pay $10/month or more to keep KL and Dawny afloat.

To see if it works, open a new sub-forum and see how many people you can get to pledge, with mentioning whatever amount they feel justified. Announce it on the viewer's login screen and see if enough people would commit to a monthly payment (or a lump sum).

Paying can well be done in-world as well as with PayPal and/or Kickstart (whatever that is).

    • Cisop.Sixpence - September 14, 2011 at 14:18 Reply

Kickstarter is the largest funding platform for creative projects in the world. Every week, tens of thousands of amazing people pledge millions of dollars to projects from the worlds of music, film, art, technology, design, food, publishing and other creative fields. (

I don't see anything setup for Kirstens Viewer yet, so if we were to use that, someone would need to set it up and then we'd need to spread the word.

      • steelsnake - September 15, 2011 at 0:23 Reply

Ok. Well, more alternatives to donate/pay are always good. The trick will be to find enough people anyway.

  1. Rufus Darkfold - September 16, 2011 at 6:12 Reply

Your viewer made SL look better than any of the others.
You gotta do what you gotta do, of course. Take care of her.

Perhaps the features of this viewer can be taken by the community and fed back into the Firestorm and/or the Linden viewer, or carried forward as a separate project.

    • shirleymarquez - September 17, 2011 at 5:07 Reply

The source code is available so there is certainly no bar to those projects picking up the features, especially now that Firestorm is working with a reasonably current code base. (When they were still doing viewers based on 2.5 it would have been more difficult.) What they don't have is Kirsten herself and her knowledge and expertise; those will be difficult to replace.

There is also no reason that the torch of Kirstens Viewer couldn't be picked up by a new developer or developers. Using the name would be rude at the very least, but using the code would be in the proper spirit of open source development.

No, I'm not volunteering! I don't even remotely have the necessary expertise in viewer development, and especially not in the intricacies of OpenGL.

First and foremost, let me repeat my best wishes and positive thoughts for both Dawny and Kirstin! I wish both of you the best and thank you so much for all that you have given us.
Here we are so many weeks later and, even though I am using the latest SL viewer, the last release of Kirstins Viewer still is working very well for me and probably a bit more stable than the other viewers out there. I have read the NWN blog and the posts regarding setting up a possible fund to contribute funding that would help defray the real life costs and possibly keep this project going. I think it is a great idea and there are enough of us to do it. The idea that so much has been provided for us totally free already is a little insane when you think about it, and the contribution would be minimal if enough us took part.
Also, the idea of selling ad space on the log in screens actually sort of appeals to me. DO I LOVE the idea? No. But it IS still a pretty clever solution and frankly, I am surprised no one has done it yet. I , with others, sort of laughed at some of the critical comments in previous form topics concerning al lthe "Meeroo" promotion that has been part of the log in for some time now. (Hey, I own 4 of the animals myself, and they are cute, but even i was getting tired of looking at them every time I logged in.) It DOES demonstrate the viability of log in advertising and, if it would keep the porject going AND possibly help Dawny..then I would be tickled to deal with a little advertising when I logged into Kirstins.
Of course, that is just me being selfish and wanting this project to not end. The most important thing is that Kirstin and Dawny be well and that we give them our love!

    "Dawny has been very Ill"
